Signs

I have had to redo many of the signs becaue the first ones were handmade and took a while, and when they got ripped, it took a lot of work to redo them. So I have decided to make one on the ocmputer, so when one rips, I can just print off a new one.

Second day I was open. I had about 5 or 6 familes come in. They were so nice and sweet. We talked and had a good time, and I learned they have just recently started attending chirch there.

And, of course, I have more laundry to do.

I have had to make a special section for formals because so many of them have been brought in. I could not believe it when a woman brought in 6 mens suits, all pretty much in mint condition.

Announcments

The Angel Food Ministries is an organization that distributes food. People can come in and buy some amazing food at a lower price. They asked me for some papaers with informantion about the clothing closet to put in their distribution boxes.

Here is an example of one:

I had an announcment come out in the bulletin at the church. It is sent out every week to members and visitors at the church, and to the surrounding communities.

For Those In Need
Lil’ Sprouts is a clothing closet open to anyone. There is clothing for all ages and all sizes. It is located in the church’s lower level and there are signs showing where it is located. It will be open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 9am to 11 am. Feel free to come in. Each season there is a distribution policy and with each season, the amount given out is changed.
For Those Who Have Helped the Need
Thank you to all those who have donated items and given their time to help me. I have been bombarded with laundry the last few weeks. But, finally, all is done, and I am ready to open in November. If anybody is looking for community service hours for school, I could use the help and there is plenty to do for any age that needs hours. I am always needing clothes and hangers, which is one item I lack. Please encourage your friends, after yard sales, to maybe donate some of the leftover items to me or maybe another organization. Again, thanks to all who have helped so far.

Even though I am only open on a few Saturdays, I help people throughout the week also. If someone comes down while I am down there during the week, I gladly help them then and not push them to wait. Some people live farther out and can only come on certain days of the week, so if they are lucky enough to catch me, I take them down there.

Opening Day!!!!

I had a few families come in, but I didn't expeact too many to come on the first day. I spent 4 hours at the clothing closet today. I have almost an abundance of clothes. It's better to be safe than sorry. I did find out what I am lacking and the sizes many of the families need.

I have been practicing a lot for Nutcracker lately. This year I am a Baker and a Soldier 8. I have had two practices every week until recently I have had one every day for 5.5 hours.

I have always loved being in the Nutcracker, but this is the first year I have danced. i usually tumble in only one scene. But now that I am in Owensboro Dance Theater, I dance in 2 scenes. I get a dressing rom with a lighted mirror like those in the movies. The performance is this Friday and Saturday and I just can't wait.

Making some last minute changes to the room. I will be opening the first Saturday in November. I know that seems far off, but with everything that still needs to be done, there is no other wya. I spent 2 hours rearranging the room, because in LESS than 24 hours MORE clothes showed up.

10-21-09

Today I spent 3 hours finishing putting away clothes. I return to to church to find boxes of clothes waiting for me. I have used up all the hangers, only to find bags ful in the closet. What a miracle! Everything is sorted and hung up niw.

There have been announcements made and today I spent another hour today making posters and hanging them up. They are located all thoughout the church and soon I will be making an "ad" in the church currier.

BEFORE PICTURES (of the room)- There is a lot of work ahead of me!!

One wall and corner with a plastic rod

The wall with the door and a picture somemade made a few years ago

A wall with 2 double windows lookinf out to the front entrance

A wall with the old puupet stage here for storage, the stage has to stay and I will be working around it

The wall with the plastic rod again, many things are stored underneath

I have been trying to figure out EXACTLY how the room needs to arranged. It turns out I have too many clothes for such a small amount of space. So I am trying to put up a double rod on one whole wall. That should be more than enough room.

As the clothes keep coming I get stuck doing luandry. Oh well, it helps me unwind and calm myself at the end of the day.

I have had butterflies in my stomach all morning. Earlier I found out I would be making a public announcement about the clothing closet and me needind donations. I have never been good with public speaking, but I am working on it.

I was trembling as I made my way down to the pulpit, and I could barely hold my paper. I had to write down EXACTLY what I was going to say or I would for sure forget something. I started talking slow and quiet. But then it all seemed to come to me. I was talking loud and clear, with a slight tremble in my voice. You could only hear it if you were listened for it. I know in the future I will be making more announcements about this, so I will be working on my public speaking skills in the meantime.

I hope I work on them quickly, because I have to make another announcement at the Leadership Team meeting tonight and another after that at the Business Meeting. I really need to get to work on what EXACTLY I am going to say...

9-19-09

I have just completed 8 loads of laundry. I absolutly despise laundry, I have never liked it, and I never WILL like it. And then you have to fold all the laudry. Then there is the added bonus for me-seperating all of it into boys and girls and sizes. The letter about donations has only been out a few days and already people are going crazy over it.

I guess doing luandry is just one of the negatives about operating a clothing closet, but there will be many positives in the future, I just know things like that.

I have been continuing dance practices this week. It has proven to be challenging, but it is loads of fun and I feel that I am improving. I started something new this week...TAP DANCING...I have never done it before, but it is so much fun. Since I am older, I have to start in an older and more advanced class, so I have a lot to catch up on.

The annual show, Nutcracker, has been a blast preparing for. Each class we have is like an audition for a part in it. I have been stretching and conditioning all summer to make a good impression. I have performed in this before, but only as an extra. This year, since I made the company, I will have a minimum of three parts and they will be bigger and better. I don't know what parts they will end of giving me, but it's just fun being in it, no matter the part.

9-16-09

Today has been awesome. My plan about opening the clothing closet has been approved and I can start it as soon as I am ready. I have been to the room where I will be working, it is a fair size, and I know wxactly how I want to arrange it. I have created this project from scratch and so many people are eager to get involved. There has been nothing like this before in this area and everyone is looking forward to it opening. I know there is going to be a lot of work involved, but I am ready to take on the challenge. I feel this project will be benificial to the community and will create an amazing impact that will last a long while,

I am planning on opening a clothing closet at Third Baptist Church, it probably won't open untill early October because I will have so many preperations. I have been planning everything for this all through the summer. I have come up with safety plans, budgets, timelines, everything you could think of.

This is for low income families in and around the dowtown community. This will help them meet the basic needs for life, one of which is clothing. I am oging to be starting this from scratch, I had the idea first, so therefore I will be taking responisibility for it.

I came up with the idea when someone came up to a awhile ago asking if the church has any supply of clothes. They really needed to get somewhere like the Goodwill or St. Vinncent de Paul, but of course they had no means of getting there.

This will be a hard task, and it will be very new to me, but I am welcoming this new challenge. I think this will prove to be a very rewrding task. I am hoping to create a lasting impact on the community.

9-11-09

During the past week, I have started up dance for the year. This is only my second year doing this. I decided this year I would try out for the Owensboro Dance Theater. I had been stretching and conditioning all summer. I went to the audtions feeling terrified I would be lughed at. I came out of the auditions feeling relieved. I thought I did pretty good. I went back last week to check the ODT Company members...and there I was. I had made it. It was such a wonderful day because then I had pictures and then I convinced my mom to take me shopping for dance wear.

This year I decided I would work my absolute hardest to become better abd not feel so timid around the more experienced dancers. But as soon as I found out that wonderful peice of news, I had a big confidence boost.

This week so far I have completed 6 hours of dance practice. The dances include tap, ballet, pointe, and jazz. I am thinking about taking up hip hop in the future, but I would like to balance this schedule first. I have never danced tap before, but I think it would be fun. I am always up for a new challenge.

My next step in dance is to audition for Nutcracker Ballet. That should be interesting.

Over The Summer

Over the summer of 2009, I spent 160 hours volunteering at Owensboro Medical Health System. Each day I volunteered, I worked in the Emergency Department and one other place. That place could be cafeteria, kitchen, sterile proccessing, or one of many nursing units. I was given a huge responsibility and I had to sho I could be trusted with it. I learned wonderful people skills. I would "mingle" with patients, families, and visitors trying to find their way around.

At each area I worked, I was required to work side-by-side woth many others. At first I was intimidated by the doctors and nurses rushing around. But I soon became well-adjusted to these new conditions. My goal throughout the summer was to better my "people skills" and better the health of the community with whatever I could do.

I am now not as shy around new people as much as I used to be. And each patient I left had a smile on their face bigger than the one I saw when I first showed up.

While volunteering I earned the Service Award and Teamwork Award. The service was awarded because no matter where I went or how much I disliked a job, I would go and try my best. I would try my hardest at all jobd, no matter what the case was. The teamwork was awarded to me because each day I had been paired with someone new, and I was required to train them. At the beginning I had been told I would have the same person each day. But even though this had happened, I made the best of it and I gained so many friendships out of it.

I have a small sample of the hours and signatures of my advisors in my notebook.

Introduction

This is a log of CAS hours for the my IB diploma. I have been keeping a written journal and so I don't have to rip pages out of it just to copy them, I will we typing then on here. I won't journal everyday, but once I get a few written journals, I will type them on here. So basically, I am doing twice the work just so I can stay organized. I don't exactly know what to talk about, but I guess that is why this a learning exerpience. I hope to learn something new with each project I do. I hope everyone has comments so I can make this even better.

Thanks
